Simonsig Redhill Pinotage 2016
Full bodied, wood-matured Pinotage from a dedicated vineyard site. A dense, opaque color, this wine has aromas and flavors of ripe plums and maraschino cherries. Spicy layers of cedar polish the tannins, giving the wine an elegant longevity. While approachable now, it has the structure to age for a further six to eight years in the bottle.
Redhill Pinotage is a selection of the best new oak-matured wine from the famous red hills of the Simonsig Estate. The red soil originates from decomposed shale and granite, and is considered to be the best soil for growing red wines because of good drainage and moisture retention capacity. The 2013/2014 growing season will be remembered as one of the wettest seasons. Although the 2014 harvest had its unique challenges, it delivered wines of great quality. Simonsig uses traditional open-top fermenters called “kuipe” with manual punching of the cap every two to three hours to give ample extraction of fruit and color. Fermentation temperatures peaked at 29° Celsius with a gentle pressing after 5 to 6 days on skins. Malolactic fermentation occurred in the tanks. The wine was matured 13 months in 89% French oak and 11% American white oak, 60% new, 40% second fill. The wine received four rackings before bottling.
A great wine for hearty meat dishes such as rare roast beef or venison, Italian red sauce meals and flavorful cheeses.
